TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) and TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction): Navigating Male Infertility Solutions

In the world of assisted reproductive technologies, there are two important procedures, TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) and TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction), that play a key role in helping couples on their journey to becoming parents, especially when facing challenges in conceiving naturally.

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration):

The primary goal of PGD during IVF is to assess the genetic makeup of embryos before they are implanted in the uterus. This meticulous examination is especially crucial in cases where there is an advanced maternal age, a history of genetic diseases, repeated miscarriages, or repeated IVF failures. It is also used for family balancing. PGD can help identify embryos with the highest potential for successful implantation and healthy development.

What We Do: We delicately collect sperm from the testicles using a special needle.

When We Use It: TESA is used when there’s a barrier preventing sperm from being in the ejaculate, often linked to obstructive azoospermia. It’s also used when a man can’t provide a semen sample.

Why It’s Good: TESA is a precise and minimally invasive procedure done under local anesthesia. It gives us a chance to retrieve sperm when other methods might not work.

TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction):

What We Do: We extract sperm through a minor surgical procedure.

When We Use It: TESE is used when TESA doesn’t provide enough sperm or in cases of non-obstructive azoospermia, where the testicles may not be producing sperm effectively.

Why It’s Good: TESE has a higher success rate in getting viable sperm, making it a valuable option for couples facing more complex infertility issues.

Once we have these retrieved sperm, which are often the missing piece for fertility, they become crucial for the next step—Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

It’s essential to understand that choosing between TESA and TESE depends on individual factors.
